This study is designed to determine the effect of Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the absence and presence of ethanol on serotonergic neurons and microglia (the immune cell of the brain). SHSY 5Y and microglia EOC13.31 cells will be cultured according to established lab protocols, each plate will be treated in the presence or absence of ethanol.

Specific changes will be further determined by using confocal microscopy experiments. End point assays will be performed to measure cell viability, oxidative stress, and protein expression of apoptosis markers such as caspase 3 & 9 activation, PARP fragmentation.

This study will ultimately provide a better understanding of the effects of NSAIDs when combined with low-high alcohol levels on the hippocampal neurons and immune function of the brain.
