Based on results of the National College Health Assessment II (NCHAII) administered Fall 2016 to a UTRGV sample, students at UTRGV are reporting high levels of mental health symptoms, but low diagnoses.
The proposed research study aims to measure self-reported symptoms of anxiety and depression within the UTRGV population to better assess whether rates of these disorders are indeed lower than rates for national samples of college students or if they are under-diagnosed. Additionally, a focus on the relationship of social media to the symptomatology of these disorders will be explored. In order to do so, a survey will be administered to UTRGV students.
The results from this research will contribute more information to support the mental health and understanding of UTRGV students to assist with new interventions and programs for students struggling with mental health issues.
