To determine the effect of mixing alcohol with NSAIDs on the brain, we treated serotonergic neurons and microglia with different NSAIDs, and varying levels of ethanol. For all drugs, adding ethanol increased oxidative stress and decreased cell viability, suggesting that combining alcohol and OTC painkillers may harm the brain.
